Brand You

In regards to social media nothing could be truer. As an entrepreneur everything you do – whether it be personal or business related, impacts your brand. So you have to ask yourself, how do I want to be known?

When my business coach suggested that I start a new Facebook page under my name I was resistant. You see to her, I would be creating a culture for my brand, by letting my followers get to know me. For me I was used to posting under the anonymity of a business page with a business name. The private person that I am didn’t like the fact of simple aspects of my life being so public.

DID YOU KNOW….
It is against FB policy and procedure to do business on your personal profile 😮
If you are conducting business from your personal profile, you run the risk of having your profile shut down.

Once I started the page, the first thing I noticed was that I was very cautious to post, almost scared. I mean this page not only reflected me personally but as an business owner, and as business owner, talking smack about reality tv was not going to cut it. It was time to cut the crap and do the work.

I immediately thought of a friend of mine. This friend has their social media accounts under their business name but uses it for personal pleasure. Gossip, political views, personal opinions, modified profanity – all go on under the BUSINESS account. Would you want to work with this business? I didn’t think so.

So I took the plunge, and started a new page, under my name, with my picture and tagline that represents who I am. Every day I am front and center, ready to relay my message to the world.

I’ll admit it was weird at first. I was really focused on re-establishing since most of my followers on my previous page never really knew who I was, since I posted under a business name. But I realized I couldn’t put a lot of effort into trying to get people to make the switch over to the new page. I had to start to from scratch, be authentic and let things happen organically. And you know what? I am happy I did! In just 30 days, I had over 1000 followers (almost the same amount that was on my business page – which took me over 1 year to accumulate).

I have also found that by branding myself thru a professional fb page, I am conveying a sense of professionalism and that comes with being a business owner.

So my question to all my entrepreneurs: Are you running your business on your personal profiles or a business profile? Why? Comment below and let me know your thoughts?
