What Is A “Good” Book?

booksWhat Is A “Good” Book?

My first exposure to personal development was back in 2010 when I became a Health & Wellness Coach. The company I was affiliated with suggested that you read 10 pages a day of a “good” book. This was part of our training as a new business owner.

A “good” book? What exactly did that mean? I was already an avid reader, always getting the latest copy of a James Patterson, Sue Grafton or Patricia Cornwell book. Suspense, mystery, thrillers – to me those were good books.

But I quickly found out that, when they said a good book, they meant a book in the self-help/personal development genre. Books that would expand your mind, push you to strive for continuous improvement in every aspect of your life.

Ooooh. One of those books……..

Which book did I start with? Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy (I now recommend this book to everyone I work with). It’s short, simple and to the point – but it gave me my first AHA moment and from there my journey started. Next I read The Slight Edge, then Go For No and so on and so on.

Now I am constantly growing my home library. These days I average a minimum of two books a month, along with 2-3 magazines (usually Success, Entrepreneur and Inc.) I also run a monthly virtual book club where we discuss the current reading via an online forum and google hangout.

Devotional and Spiritual books have also become a welcome part of my home library. Generally these books are broken down into a daily reading over the course of month; this is usually how I start my day. And every so often I will still pick up a suspense/mystery book, that bit of variation helps me keep on track with my reading.
